Complicated Fit? Send us Your Topography Maps
by Kelly Indovina, OD
Director of Professional Relations
Corneal mapping can be a valuable tool when assessing a cornea for a GP contact lens fit. A practitioner may find this tool beneficial when examining a patient with keratoconus, a high degree of corneal cylinder, post keratoplasty or after a traumatic injury. It may also be a helpful reference for normal corneal topography.
When interpreting a corneal map for contact lens fitting, the most helpful type of map is the axial map. It is also very important to use a normalized dioptric scale rather than an absolute scale. The color on the axial map is used to determine an equivalent dioptric value for the base curve.
