Neutralizing Residual Astigmatism

by Michael A. Johnson, FCLSA

Correcting residual astigmatism is a topic of debate. It depends on whether the astigmatism is corneal, lenticular, or complex. In correcting against-the-rule cylinder, front torics are the least desirable of all torics. Because they have to be prism ballasted to prevent off axis rotation, they are substantially thicker and typically less comfortable. However, in cases where there is 1.00D or less of residual cylinder, there is a process that is often over looked. Known as Panofocal®, the process involves the application of an aspheric polish to the periphery of the anterior surface of a spherical lens. This process will usually reduce the circle of least confusion therefore producing a sharper image on the retina. This in turn will provide your patient with improved contrast and better visual acuity. By utilizing the Panofocal process it will provide your patient with maximum visual acuity without the thickness and fl uctuating vision associated with front toric designs. In the event that the Panofocal does not provide the visual acuity desired, your only other alternative would be a front toric design. If you need further information or assistance in ordering a Panofocal or front toric lens design, please call the Art Optical Consultation Department.
