Art Optical Announces Specialty Contact Lens Travel Grant Recipient

Grand Rapids, MI (August 3, 2023) – Art Optical Contact Lens, Inc., a leading provider of custom contact lenses, in partnership with Contamac, has announced another recipient of their Specialty Contact Lens Travel Grant.

Based on her case report: “Transplant Prevention – Management of PMD with Ampleye® Scleral Lenses”, Stephanie Schumacher, OD, FAAO, of Ontario, Canada, was awarded a $750 travel grant at the recent International Congress of Scleral Contacts meeting in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

Dr. Schumacher’s passion for specialty lenses goes back to her beginning years in Optometry School at University of Waterloo, where she became “fascinated by the profound and immediate impact specialty lenses, particularly scleral lenses, have on patients’ lives.” Her case report highlights the differences between Keratoconus (KCN) and Pellucid Marginal Degeneration (PMD) and discusses why scleral lenses are often superior to corneal GP lenses in the management of PMD. “Specialty lenses are all about customization,” said Dr. Schumacher. “We owe it to these patients who have endured so much with their vision to be well informed on their conditions and translate that knowledge into highly specific and well-designed contact lens solutions.”

A former Cornea and Contact Lens Resident at the Michigan College of Optometry, Dr. Schumacher now practices at Oakville Trafalgar Eye Center in Ontario, where she is the founder of the Cornea and Contact Lens program and the Departments lead practitioner.

As dedicated supporters of optometric education, Art Optical and Contamac encourage students, residents, and newly licensed OD’s with an interest in specialty contact lenses to consider applying for a travel grant to attend a future professional contact lens meeting. Qualification details and grant applications can be requested by contacting Art Optical or visiting artoptical.com/travelgrant.
